The Professional Amateur

I have quite a few hobbies that I have picked up over the years, but I am not fluent in any of them. Why did I pick them up then? To be completely honest, I have no idea. From photography to embroidery and now even some minor woodworking, I seem to rotate what I am doing with some knowledge in hopes to increase my skill level.

So here is a quick list of my hobbies:

  • Photography (Free)
  • Embroidery
  • YouTube gaming personality (Free)
  • Twitch streaming personality (Free)
  • Minor Woodworking projects
  • Hydroponics Gardening
  • Social Media Management
  • Role Playing Games (Free)
  • Blogger (Free)

I have knowledge among all of these hobbies of mine to actually be somewhat productive. The problem I have is that when I start to really get into one and invest time into it, I somehow lose interest and move onto another. I will sooner or later come back to that hobby at some point during the year. So by the time I come back to a particular hobby, I have to relearn some of the information or plans I had in the past.

I believe that when I get too into a hobby, I imagine it sort of like a job. Even though I am the boss of myself, in my mind I made that hobby into a job and it is no longer fun. I imagine that if I stay away from it long enough it will turn back into a hobby and will be fun again. For the most part I am right. When I go back it is like starting over new and I discover new ideas or plans that I want to ambitiously do. Even if I am having a blast doing a hobby.

There are other reasons why I alternate hobbies. Money is one, the root of all evil. As listed above, I have some hobbies that cost me next to nothing to do. All I have to do is charge some batteries and off I go. For the other hobbies, I just did not have the resources readily available for me to do my project and I am a little too impatient for something o be ordered and arrive in the mail. Also, some of the equipment is more expensive than I am wiling to spend, such as some of the pumps and basins for the hydroponics gardening.

Two more factors are time and what season it is. These go hand in hand because sometimes I either do not have the time to make significant progress on a hobby project or I do not like the weather. I like the cold and do not like it to be too warm. I get cranky when I am warm. Having a full time job that is at least an hour away from my home and also having a family I want to spend time with makes it difficult to really work on my hobbies.

I guess I try to fit in my hobbies when I can or when I am interested. I do not believe it is a bad thing that these interest me, but I do feel like I need to stick with one long enough to become fluent. I am an amateur at all of them so that must make me a professional amateur.

Can you think of any other hobbies I can try? Share a comment with your hobby.
